Because this week is half-term (for most) we had access to the Youth Hall and once again decided to make most of it by spending the evening thrashing around like mad things. We started slowly with a rather lack lustre game of French cricket – but due to the lustre being lacking we thankfully didn’t experience any lasting injuries. Then the evening progressed, along with the likelihood of injuries, and enjoyed a game of Skittle Ball. A number of scratches and clashes later and we had a well deserved break. During the break, seemingly randomly, we got into an interesting philosophical and ethical discussion of the rights and wrongs of abortion and “saviour siblings” – definitely one to return to at a later date.

In no way connected to anything above, but the following quotes were harvested this evening, both spoken by the same person and directed at the same person:

“do you mind, you’re in my private area”

“you sweat in some strange places”

Once we’d recovered from the physical exertion of skittle ball, and the shock of an interesting philosophical and ethical discussion, we returned to the Youth Hall for a game of Unihoc which turned out to further increase the likelihood of accident and injury. After a number of shoulder-barges, raised sticks, slaps, bangs, collisions and almost tears, we called it a day. Nobody died but there were a few broken nails.

During the final break we watched the following video entitled “God is a DJ“:

The video was followed by an excellent discussion about free-will and predestination, the degree to which God interferes in our lives, the possibility of God giving up on people, and the place and impact of prayer in the video and in our lives. Please grab a cup of your favoured beverage and take 7 minutes to watch the video and see how it challenges your ideas of God.

Finally, just to help you waste make the most of the last moments of half-term here are a video and some random links for your enjoyment.

This week we had uninterrupted access to the Youth Hall and made the most of it. Advertised as a “sporting frenzy”, we weren’t let down. Due to a slow start the lads entered into a game of “Headers and Volleys”, a game which was once the main focus of BB activity for Seniors, but simply managed to confuse Steph and Nick tonight. Then we switched to the more sedate option of French Cricket, which seemed to move much quicker than normal but we still barely broke a sweat. After a while, and much to Nick’s displeasure, we turned to Unihoc for a bit of frantic exercise and it didn’t disappoint. The teams were picked fairly by David and Andrew (who joined us for the evening as their D of E group doesn’t meet during the end of term break) but the game was a little one-sided. After a good long session we broke for refreshments and a rest.

We resumed the session with the same teams, except for one tactical substitution, but before long the losing team got frustrated and a little disheartened. We shuffled the players around before starting again from scratch – this time the game was much more even. Perhaps a little too well-matched as there was only one goal scored in about 20 minutes, but an enjoyable game anyway. Then we had a complete change and tried to play dodgeball by following the rules which feature in the film of the same name (rather than the Junior Section favourite). It took a couple of attempts before we got the rules right, but we persevered, even in the face of enthusiastic debate. If you’re interested, you can play Dodgeball online here. On a not-quite-related note, check out the FaceBall phenomenon. Either watch the short video introductions below, read “A FaceBall Primer for the Memory Deficient“, or take a quick look at a couple of photos of how the game is played. It definitely looks like a possible future Amicus activity.

Obviously a number of people of people have excuses because they are at work – but the rest of you… Despite there only being three of us this time, we had a great time. The breakfast was as good as ever, and a bargain, and we chatted about a whole range of things, none of which we’ll share. You’ll have to come along next time…

It’s been a long time coming, but I’ve finally managed to get round to writing the “start of session” letter. Yes I know it’s a few months late, but it’s done now. You can download it here, and it will also be emailed to all current Amicus members. It also includes the order form for the all new Amicus Hoodies which are available at the bargain price of just £20 (click the picture to the right to see the design). If you would like to purchase one please complete the form and hand it to an Amicus leader by Friday, 2nd May at the latest.

Tonight it was an opportunity to get into the Youth Hall and expend some of that extra half term energy. We started with a sedate game of Pool and a nippletastic game of ’round-the-table’ Table Tennis before heading into the manic world of “skittle ball“. The team selection resulted in girls (and Ricky) versus boys – and although the “girls” ran away with it for a while, the boys came back strong and made it a very close game in the second half. On this occasion I was glad to be considered a girl as we won at the last moment. After a brief rest, and a short kick-about for the lads, we joined together again for a high-energy game of Unihoc. There were a few dodgy moments but no lasting damage, and in the end it proved to be an excellent. The whole evening was very energetic and it’s at times like this that I almost don’t mind only getting decent access to the Youth Hall at half term ;o)

We were very happy to be joined by David Putman (following some serious prodding from Sarah) and we hope to see him back again soon.
